Jazz pianist John Blanda, from Maplewood, MN, currently based in Los Angeles, will be returning to White Bear Lake with his trio for an improvisatory jazz evening paying homage to Liszt, Debussy, and Chopin. John studied Electronic Production and Design at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and is a producer for ensemble groups for radio, advertisements, and short films. His new Blue Flannels EP blends jazz, hip-hop and R&B together with spectral piano interludes, massive synths, and neck-breaking beat patterns.  A recent review states that “Blue Flannels, with its aggressive drums, complex chordal structures, and bevy of original compositions packs a level of originality that can’t be matched.”

“Adele aus der Ohe” Play BY LaWAYne Leno

June 1 at 2 p.m. and June 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Our fifth offering for the season will be the premier of a piano play: “Adele aus der Ohe” By LaWayne Leno. The German pianist, Adele aus der Ohe, was perhaps the most important female student of the great Franz Liszt. She was much sought after in America in the late 1800s and early 1900s as the first performer at many important venues, as a pianist who somehow could bestow a “blessing” on newly -founded institutions. Thus, she was asked to play the first concert in Carnegie Hall in New York City, the first concert for Schubert Club in St. Paul, and was the first pianist to perform with the new Minneapolis Symphony (now our Minnesota Orchestra). This new play highlights her time in Minnesota and in New York and then her difficult life in Berlin, Germany after World War I. Live piano music is featured throughout the play. Our piano will be dedicated to this revered pianist in memory of her contributions to the early concert life in the Twin Cities. The author of the play “Adele aus der Ohe”, LaWayne Leno, a resident of Dellwood, will also be signing his internationally recognized biography: “The Untold Story of Adele aus der Ohe, From a Liszt Student to a Virtuoso.”
